UPCYCLE is a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Doctoral Network focused on upscaling deep conversion technologies for hard-to-recycle biogenic waste.
2. What are MSCA Doctoral Networks?
MSCA Doctoral Networks (DN) are consortium-based training networks for PhD students, designed to raise the attractiveness and excellence of doctoral training in Europe. These networks involve collaborative research projects addressing a well-defined scientific/research challenge, implemented through individual PhD projects.
3. Who are the supervisors for the PhD projects?
Each Doctoral Candidate will have supervisors from both the academic and industrial partners involved in the UPCYCLE network.
Eligibility and Application Process
1. Who can apply for PhD positions in UPCYCLE?
Applicants should have an M.Sc. degree with distinction in Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Process Engineering, Bioengineering, Mechanical engineering, Physical Chemistry, Chemistry, Industrial Chemistry, or related fields.
2. How do I apply for a PhD position?

3. What are the eligibility criteria for PhD enrolment?
Applicants must meet the specific requirements set by the partner universities, including academic qualifications and any additional criteria outlined in the call for applications.
4. Can non-EU international students apply for the PhD positions?
Yes, international candidates are encouraged to apply for the PhD position while respecting the mobility rule.
5. What is the mobility rule for applying to the PhD positions
To be eligible for the PhD positions, candidates must have not resided or carried out their main activity (e.g., work, study) in the country of the recruiting beneficiary for more than 12 months in the 36 months immediately before their recruitment date. This rule ensures that the program is accessible to candidates from diverse geographical backgrounds.
6. What is the selection process like?
Applications are assessed based on academic qualifications, previous experience, technical skills, communication skills, and motivation for the project.
7. What are the requirements for the English certificate needed for admission to the program?

Program Details
1. What does the PhD program involve?
The program includes three years of fully funded research, international training, networking opportunities, and two secondments at partner universities and industries.
2. What is the duration of the PhD program?
The PhD program duration is three years, with enrollment planned for September-October 2025.
3. Are there any secondment periods during the PhD?
Yes, each Doctoral Candidate is expected to have two secondment periods: one at a partner university (6 months) and one at a partner industry (3 months).
4. What are the main responsibilities of a Doctoral Candidate?
Responsibilities include developing a specific research program within UPCYCLE, participating in training programs and project meetings, writing scientific papers, and presenting research at conferences and outreach events.
Compensation and Benefits
1. What is the salary for PhD candidates?
Each DC position has its unique benefits, which follow MSCA-DN guidelines. Approximate baseline for gross amounts depends on national legislation in each member country and are detailed for each PhD position, with the net salary depending on the candidate’s family situation.
2. What benefits are provided to Doctoral Candidates?
Benefits include comprehensive training, exposure to both academic and industrial sectors, and the opportunity to work with leading researchers and companies in Europe.
3. Are there any additional allowances provided?
Yes, candidates are eligible for a 600 €/month mobility supplement for travel and accommodation costs, plus a 660 €/month family supplement, if applicable.
